Health Minister Launches National Newborn Care Guidelines

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Health and Social Care of the Federal Government of Somalia officially launched the National Newborn Care Guidelines on Sunday, aimed at standardising newborn healthcare services across health facilities nationwide.

The launch was attended by the State Minister for Health, Dr. Maryan Mohamed Hussein, departmental directors from the Ministry, health partners including WHO and UNICEF, civil society organisations such as Save the Children, universities and healthcare professionals.

The guidelines provide Somalia with a unified, evidence-based national framework to guide doctors, nurses, midwives and other healthcare workers in delivering quality and consistent care to newborns across the country.

The Minister said the Ministry remains committed to accelerating efforts to reduce preventable causes of newborn deaths, particularly during the first 28 days of life, and ensuring that every Somali child receives quality healthcare from birth.

The launch marks an important step toward improving newborn care services. The Ministry will focus on implementing the guidelines, training healthcare workers and ensuring their effective use in health facilities across the country.
