Harardheere votes freely three years after its liberation from the Khawaarij

Harardheere (SONNA) - Residents of Harardheere in Mudug region went to the polls on Wednesday in the Galmudug elections to the state House of Representatives and local councils, in a district that was liberated from the Khawaarij in 2023.

Senator Samsam Dahir, who was in the town for the vote, said that not long ago she and others had been fighting the Khawaarij, and that today the people of Harardheere were freely casting their votes in the place from which the group had been driven out. She described the return of peace to the district as a cause for celebration, and congratulated its residents.

She said that when Harardheere was liberated in 2023, the aim had been to lift the enemy from its people and make the town peaceful. Residents were now choosing freely the candidates and the parties they preferred, she said, and she called on everyone in the district to cast their vote.

Harardheere is among the districts taking part in Galmudug’s second one person one vote election this year, following the ballot held on 30 July. The Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC), Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, said polling stations had opened on Wednesday morning in eleven districts of Galmudug and ten of Hirshabelle, where voters are taking part in the same combined elections.

The Senator thanked all those who had worked for peace in Harardheere and supported the one person one vote election. She said the government, of which she is a part, stood day and night so that the people of the district would have peace and development and could choose their own leaders freely.
