Galmudug Leadership Transition: Liban Ahmed Hassan Takes Over from Outgoing President

Dhusamereb(SONNA) – Galmudug’s newly elected leader, Liban Ahmed Hassan, on Wednesday formally took over the presidency from outgoing President Ahmed Abdi Kariye at a handover ceremony held at the regional state’s presidential palace in Dhusamareb.
The transition comes a day ahead of Liban’s inauguration, scheduled for November 5, 2026, following his election as Galmudug’s new leader in a vote that marked the first time the state’s leadership was chosen directly by popular vote.
Speaking at the ceremony, Liban thanked his predecessor for the peaceful transfer of power and commended his efforts in strengthening state institutions, political stability and governance in Galmudug.
Liban pledged to prioritise security, intensify the fight against Al-Shabaab (Khawaariij), and work to reclaim areas still under the group’s control. He also outlined plans to promote reconciliation, strengthen public institutions and improve basic services.
He said his administration would be guided by consultation, unity, justice, transparency and accountability, urging Galmudug residents to support the new government and work together towards peace and development.
Outgoing President Ahmed Abdi Kariye, in his remarks, reflected on Galmudug’s political journey and highlighted the achievements of his administration during its time in office.
