Agriculture Minister Meets Refugees International Delegation to Discuss Food Security and Climate Resilience

Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye), today received a delegation from Refugees International (RI), led by its President, Jeremy Konyndyk, and Abdullahi Halakhe.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation, food security, community resilience, and leveraging agricultural investment to support livelihood recovery and sustainable solutions for displaced populations.
The discussions also addressed preparedness for potential El Niño-related risks, particularly flooding, excessive rainfall, crop damage, and population displacement. Minister Maareeye highlighted the importance of early warning systems, water management, irrigation, and climate-resilient agriculture to reduce the impact of disasters and protect agricultural production.
The sides also discussed agricultural financing, development of value chains, rural infrastructure, and creating employment opportunities for youth and women. They emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation to support climate adaptation, livelihood recovery, and the development of a resilient food system in Somalia.
