{"id":457359,"date":"2026-03-04T09:56:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T06:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=457359"},"modified":"2026-03-04T09:56:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T06:56:27","slug":"sweden-champions-state-building-and-climate-action-to-support-somalias-transformation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/sweden-champions-state-building-and-climate-action-to-support-somalias-transformation\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweden Champions State-Building and Climate Action to Support Somalia\u2019s Transformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mogadishu(SONNA)-<span class=\"s1\">Sweden will continue prioritizing state-building, resilience and economic development in Somalia, integrating human rights, gender equality and conflict-sensitive approaches across its development cooperation, according to Hans Henric Lundquist , Ambassador of Sweden to Somalia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Speaking in an interview with UNDP, the Ambassador emphasized<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">that Sweden\u2019s long-term vision is to support a peaceful, secure Somalia where people enjoy greater economic opportunities and stronger resilience to climate-related shocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA safe and secure Somalia where the population has economic opportunities are long-term goals,\u201d Ambassador Lundquist said, highlighting the importance of investing in building resilience of communities to enable them respond to climate shocks as well as peacebuilding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Reflecting on the partnership with UNDP, the Ambassador described the collaboration as longstanding and impactful, noting that reforms supported through joint efforts have created the conditions for sustained progress in governance, climate resilience and national development planning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cUNDP has been a valued partner for Sweden for a long time. The reforms UNDP has been part of have created conditions for continuous progress, improving prospects for a more peaceful and prosperous Somalia,\u201d the Ambassador said. He added that Sweden has seen tangible results through its chairmanship of the Somalia Joint Fund (SJF) steering committee and through joint initiatives supporting the National Transformation Plan (NTP) and climate-shock management systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A strong advocate of multilateralism and major contributor of core funding to UNDP, Sweden is among the top 10 non-core contributors globally. Currently, Sweden is supporting important UNDP projects in the areas of transformational governance (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/somalia\/projects\/stgp\"><span class=\"s1 s3\">STGP<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">), climate change adaptation and climate security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In the past, Sweden alone or jointly with other donors, supported programs on integrated water resources management,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/somalia\/projects\/joint-programme-sustainable-charcoal-reduction-and-alternative-livelihoods\"><span class=\"s1 s3\">charcoal reduction<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">, disaster risk reduction and early warning system (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/somalia\/projects\/promoting-resilience-through-integrated-approach-water-environment-and-disaster-risk-management-somalia\"><span class=\"s1 s3\">WEDRR Project<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/somalia\/projects\/closed-support-integrated-water-resources-management-ensure-water-access-and-disaster-reduction-somalias-agro-pastoralists\"><span class=\"s1 s3\">IWRM project<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">), leading to lasting results (see UNDP-Sweden-Somalia Partnerships Achievements). Also, UNDP and Sweden advanced climate-security mechanisms in Somalia by integrating climate-related security risks and environmental peacebuilding into community reconciliation plans and deliver peace-positive solutions on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"vm_full_width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/sites\/g\/files\/zskgke326\/files\/styles\/wysiwyg_full_width\/public\/2026-02\/sw_infogr2.jpeg?itok=-RGSEckM\" alt=\"UNDP-Sweden-Somalia partnership achievements with milestone icons on a blue line.\" width=\"1440\" height=\"799\" \/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Looking ahead, Ambassador Lundquist stressed the importance of a strong United Nations presence as Somalia transitions toward a strengthened UN Country Team framework following the expiry of the UNTMIS mandate in October 2026. He emphasized that UNDP\u2019s mandate to strengthen governance and reduce poverty will remain central to Somalia\u2019s development, and reiterated Sweden\u2019s commitment to supporting a smooth transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The longstanding ties between Sweden and Somalia, he said, will continue to deepen, with new opportunities emerging through business and trade cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSweden will continue its support to Somalia and its people.
