ARTA, Djibouti \u2013 (SONNA) \u2013<\/b> T<\/span>he 25th-anniversary commemoration of the Somali Reconciliation Conference in Arta was marked by a state gesture.<\/span> His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud conferred Somalia\u2019s Highest National Honour upon his host,<\/span> His Excellency President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti,<\/span> an act immediately commended by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) as a symbol of “enduring bonds of friendship.<\/span>“<\/span><\/p>\n

The regional body celebrated the moment,<\/span> releasing a statement that declared,<\/span> “One Region,<\/span> One Destiny:<\/span> Celebrating Solidarity and Home-Grown Peace in the IGAD region!<\/span>“<\/span><\/p>\n

IGAD lauded the award as a “profound gesture that reflects the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity between Somalia and Djibouti.<\/span>” The statement emphasized the historical weight of the 2000 Arta Peace Process,<\/span> calling Djibouti’s leadership a “defining chapter in our region\u2019s pursuit of peace,<\/span> a testament to the power of dialogue,<\/span> courage,<\/span> and African-led solutions.<\/span>“<\/span><\/p>\n

The award was the centerpiece of a day rich with symbolism,<\/span> as both leaders gathered to honor the quarter-century milestone.<\/span> The two heads of state jointly inaugurated the <\/span>“<\/b>Somali Peace Monument,”<\/b> a new landmark erected on the hallowed grounds where the 2000 conference first convened.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the inauguration,<\/span> they officially opened the newly established <\/span>“<\/b>Arta Museum.”<\/b> This institution is dedicated to preserving and narrating Somalia’s modern political journey,<\/span> from independence in 1960,<\/span> through the era of state collapse,<\/span> to the arduous path of reconciliation that was championed in Arta.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his historic address,<\/span> President Ismail Omar Guelleh recalled the “night and day” diplomatic efforts of 2000.<\/span> He shared powerful anecdotes of Djibouti’s brotherly commitment,<\/span> including the “tough love” of holding delegates’ passports,<\/span> telling them,<\/span> “We will not give you back your passports until you reach a conclusion.<\/span> Your country needs you.<\/span>“<\/span><\/p>\n

President Guelleh made a poignant call for collective progress,<\/span> addressing the youth to learn from history.<\/span> “If yesterday the motto was ‘Each for himself,<\/span>‘ today we must say,<\/span> ‘Let us find it together,<\/span>‘” he declared,<\/span> concluding with the hopeful proverb,<\/span> “A beautiful new day has dawned,<\/span> a promising morning.<\/span>“<\/span><\/p>\n

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud,<\/span> in his speech,<\/span> articulated a clear vision for Somalia’s future,<\/span> one built upon the very foundations laid in Arta.<\/span> He stressed the nation’s readiness “to move beyond the politics of personality and clan” and build a stable state based on strong,<\/span> permanent institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We want to fulfill the promise we made,<\/span>” President Mohamud affirmed, “to finalize our provisional constitution and hold ‘One Person, One Vote’ elections.”<\/p>\n

The event, which also featured a poignant art exhibition and a documentary film on the 25-year journey, served as a powerful dual tribute. It was a look back to honor the “exemplary statesmanship” of Djibouti that helped forge peace from chaos, and a clear, forward-looking commitment to the shared, stable, and prosperous future celebrated by the entire IGAD region.<\/p>\n
