Mogadishu, (SONNA) \u2013 The National Intelligence and Security Agency of Somalia (NISA) has issued a strong warning to Somali citizens and business owners against participating in or contributing to funds extorted by terrorist groups under the guise of religious \u201cZakat\u201d payments.<\/p>\n
In an official statement, NISA revealed that it is closely monitoring the financial activities and assets of terrorist networks, with particular attention to the collection of what extremists refer to as \u201cZakat\u201d \u2014 which in reality constitutes extortion and terrorist financing.<\/p>\n
The agency warned that anyone found to be contributing to these payments will be held accountable under Somalia\u2019s anti-terrorism laws as well as international regulations prohibiting the financing of terrorism. Offenders will face immediate legal action in accordance with national legislation and administrative decisions.<\/p>\n
\u201cBusinesspeople and citizens must understand that providing funds to extremist groups is a serious criminal offense,\u201d the statement said. \u201cSecurity agencies urge the public to report any information or pressure related to such collections to the appropriate authorities without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n
