{"id":444574,"date":"2025-07-06T10:54:44","date_gmt":"2025-07-06T07:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=444574"},"modified":"2025-07-06T10:54:44","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T07:54:44","slug":"texas-floods-leave-at-least-51-dead-27-girls-missing-as-rescuers-search-devastated-landscape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/texas-floods-leave-at-least-51-dead-27-girls-missing-as-rescuers-search-devastated-landscape\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas floods leave at least 51 dead, 27 girls missing as rescuers search devastated landscape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KERRVILLE, Texas (SONNA) \u2014 Rescuers scoured a devastated central Texas landscape of mangled trees, overturned cars and muck-filled debris Saturday in an increasingly bleak mission to locate survivors, including 27 girls who have not been seen since <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">their camp was slammed with a wall of water<\/span>\u00a0in a historic flash flood.<\/p>\n<p>The flooding in Kerr County killed at least 43 people, including 15 children, and at least eight people died in nearby counties.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities still have not said how many people were missing beyond the children from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp along a river in Kerr County where most of the dead were recovered.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">destructive, fast-moving waters<\/span>\u00a0rose 26 feet (8 meters) on the Guadalupe River in just 45 minutes before daybreak Friday, washing away homes and vehicles. The danger was not over as rains continued pounding communities outside San Antonio on Saturday and flash flood warnings and watches remained in effect.<\/p>\n<p>Searchers used helicopters, boats and drones to look for victims and to rescue people stranded in trees and from camps isolated by washed-out roads.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Greg Abbott vowed that authorities will work around the clock and said new areas were being searched as the water receded. He\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">declared<\/span>\u00a0Sunday a day of prayer for the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge every Texan to join me in prayer this Sunday \u2014 for the lives lost, for those still missing, for the recovery of our communities, and for the safety of those on the front lines,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-embed\">\n<div class=\"HtmlModule\" data-module-tracksubscribe=\"\" data-gtm-topic=\"No Value\" data-module-number=\"4\" data-main-module-number=\"4\">\n<p class=\"embed-caption\">Authorities were coming under scrutiny over whether the camps and residents in places long <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">vulnerable to flooding<\/span>\u00a0received proper warning and whether enough preparations were made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The hills along the Guadalupe River in central Texas are dotted with century-old youth camps and campgrounds where generations of families have come to swim and enjoy the outdoors.
