The Federal Government of Somalia has taken a historic step forward with the launch of the country\u2019s first national ID card issuance system in over 30 years. This achievement marks not only a breakthrough in Somalia\u2019s digital transformation but also a cornerstone for regional integration with the East African Community (EAC).<\/p>\n

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) announced that the printing of these new-generation ID cards is officially underway, <\/span>ushering in<\/span> a new era of progress, accountability, and inclusion for Somali <\/span>citizens<\/span>.<\/span> This exercise will also \u00a0give Somali citizens a sense of identity, ownership a<\/span>s well as a voice in community, regional and national developmental matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The national ID system is a critical component of Somalia\u2019s broader digital transformation strategy. By establishing a unified database of citizens, the government can better plan and deliver services, reduce fraud, and improve security. Furthermore, this system provides the foundation for digital innovations in governance, healthcare, and commerce, enabling Somalia to harness the power of technology to drive sustainable development.<\/p>\n

In a show of the efficiency of the new digital systems, c<\/span>itizens who have applied for an ID card will receive an SMS alert inform<\/span>ing<\/span> them of the availability of the printed card. <\/span>This<\/span> notification will provide clear details about the time and location for card collection, ensuring an orderly process and avoiding <\/span>unnecessary <\/span>disruptions<\/span>.<\/span> NIRA calls on citizens to come out in large numbers and register.<\/span><\/p>\n

A national ID system is more than just a tool for identification; it is a foundation for economic<\/span>, political<\/span>and social progress. For decades, the absence of a unified identification system has hampered Somalia\u2019s ability to provide equitable access to public services, improve governance, and enable citizens to participate fully in the economy. With the launch of this initiative, all Somali citizens now have the opportunity to enroll for an ID card that will unlock access to essential services across the public and private sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

From opening bank accounts to accessing healthcare and education, the national ID system will empower citizens with the credentials they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Moreover, this system is a key enabler for financial inclusion\u2014a critical priority <\/span>as<\/span> many <\/span>citizens<\/span> remain unbanked and excluded from formal economic systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from national service-delivery and identity, citizens who acquire IDs will <\/span>get <\/span>an opportunity to enjoy the freedom of movement provided for in the East African Community Common Market. \u00a0They will also have access to regional <\/span>trade and <\/span>employment opportunities. At state level, a harmonized identification system will strengthen cooperation in the areas of \u00a0security, migration management, and digital commerce, creating a win-win scenario for Somalia and its East African neighbors.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Federal Government of Somalia<\/span> has also prioritized transparency and efficiency in the distribution process, reassuring citizens that every effort is being made to meet the growing demand. This commitment underscores the government\u2019s dedication to building trust and creating an inclusive national system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Registering for and acquiring IDs is a crucial step as the country continues to prepare robust system for the first <\/span>national <\/span>one-person<\/span>, one-<\/span>vote elections<\/span> in decades<\/span>. <\/span>Having <\/span>an ID is \u00a0arming oneself with the crucial tool to enable them make their voice \u2013 and vote \u2013 count during the <\/span>2026 polls.<\/span><\/p>\n

As NIRA continues to roll out the ID card program, let us all recognize the significance of this moment and seize the opportunities it presents. By enrolling for an ID card, every Somali citizen is becoming part of a larger movement\u2014a movement to rebuild our nation and position Somalia as a vital contributor to the <\/span>prosperity of the <\/span>East African region.
