Addis Ababa<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has proudly taken on the chairmanship of the African Union Inter-RECs Coordination and Collaboration Platform, a pivotal mechanism designed to advance regional integration and collective action across Africa.<\/p>\n

This leadership role comes at a critical juncture, as multilateralism faces global challenges and the need for stronger regional cooperation becomes increasingly urgent. Under the guidance of IGAD\u2019s Executive Secretary, His Excellency Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the organization is committed to fostering dialogue, innovation, and collaboration among Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the African Union Commission.<\/p>\n

IGAD will work closely with fellow RECs, including the East African Community (EAC), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), and the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD). Together, they aim to strengthen peace efforts, enhance policy coordination, and harness the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and digital technologies for Africa\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

During the handover ceremony, ECOWAS President His Excellency Omar Alieu Touray passed the ceremonial gavel to Dr. Workneh, symbolizing the transition of leadership. In a statement, Dr. Workneh emphasized IGAD\u2019s dedication to unity and purpose, stating, \u201cStronger together, we move forward with purpose and unity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deputy Executive Secretary of IGAD, Mohamed Abdi Ware, also highlighted the significance of this role in a Twitter post, noting that the platform provides a vital framework for the division of labor and coordination between the African Union and the Regional Economic Commissions.<\/p>\n

The chairmanship marks a new chapter in IGAD\u2019s efforts to drive regional integration and address shared challenges, including peacebuilding, economic development, and technological advancement. As IGAD takes the helm, the organization reaffirms its commitment to working collaboratively with African nations and institutions to build a more prosperous and united continent.<\/p>\n
