{"id":435163,"date":"2025-01-28T09:13:50","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T06:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=435163"},"modified":"2025-01-28T09:13:50","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T06:13:50","slug":"declaration-of-war-m23-rebels-claim-seizing-key-dr-congo-city-of-goma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/declaration-of-war-m23-rebels-claim-seizing-key-dr-congo-city-of-goma\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Declaration of war\u2019: M23 rebels claim seizing key DR Congo city of Goma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gunfire rang out across parts of Goma, the largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), hours after\u00a0Rwanda-backed M23 rebels\u00a0said they had seized it despite the United Nations Security Council calling for an end to the offensive.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as reports emerged that DRC and Rwandan troops have also exchanged fire on Monday along their shared border, risking a rapid escalation of the conflict amid the advance of the M23 fighters.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted on X, DRC government\u2019s spokesman Patrick Muyaya confirmed the presence of Rwandan army in Goma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government continues to work to avoid carnage and loss of human life in view of the manifest intentions of Rwanda,\u201d he said, telling residents to stay home and refrain from carrying out vandalism and looting.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Monday, M23 announced the capture of Goma, which the DRC government described was a \u201cdeclaration of war\u201d by Rwanda. The UN said the capture has caused \u201cmass panic\u201d among Goma\u2019s two million residents.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3469865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/INTERACTIVE-UN-Rwanda-must-exit-DRC-JAN27-2024-1737968015.png?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C962&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE-UN- Rwanda must exit DRC-JAN27-2024-1737968015\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The M23 claim came minutes before a 48-hour deadline it had given to Congolese troops to surrender their weapons expired. Its fighters also urged Goma residents to remain calm and for members of the DRC military to assemble at the central stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Two witnesses told the Reuters news agency rebels had entered the centre of Goma.
