Mogadishu, SONNA \u2013 The Government of Somalia has welcomed a resolution passed today by the United Nations Security Council, approving a transition of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) into a transitional mission for the next two years.<\/p>\n
The UN Security Council supported Somalia\u2019s proposal to transform UNSOM, the UN\u2019s National Political Mission in Somalia, into a transitional operation effective November 1, under the new designation \u201cUnited Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia\u201d (UNTMIS).<\/p>\n
In a show of unity, all members of the Security Council endorsed the resolution, which stipulates that the Federal Government of Somalia will assume responsibility for UNSOM\u2019s current functions over the two-year transition period, supported by various UN agencies operating in the country.<\/p>\n
This proposal, submitted by Somalia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August, was the outcome of extensive negotiations over recent months between the Federal Government of Somalia and UNSOM, facilitated by a joint technical committee. The resolution was forwarded to UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres following these consultations.<\/p>\n
