MOGADISHU, SOMALIA \u2013 The Federal Government of Somalia’s Council of Ministers, led by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, has officially approved the appointment of the Somali National Media Council. This pivotal step comes as part of the country’s broader efforts to reform its media landscape, following the passage of the media law by both houses of parliament and its subsequent ratification by the President.<\/p>\n

The newly appointed nine-member council, proposed by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, includes a diverse group of individuals tasked with steering the nation towards a modernized media framework. The council’s formation is a direct result of the media law, which mandates the transition from government-controlled media to public broadcasting, signifying a shift towards greater media independence and public service in broadcasting.<\/p>\n

    In addition to the council’s establishment, the Council of Ministers also passed the Official Data Bill and ratified a tax agreement with the United Arab Emirates aimed at preventing double taxation and tax evasion. This agreement is part of Somalia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its economic relations and foster development.<\/p>\n

    Reflecting the nation’s progress in security and development, the council has ceased the practice of holding government agency meetings abroad, emphasizing the capability and readiness of Somalia to handle its affairs internally.<\/p>\n

    The establishment of the National Media Council is a significant milestone in Somalia’s commitment to media freedom and the promotion of a pluralistic media environment.
