SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (SONNA) \u2014 Authorities in the eastern Caribbean said they were trying to locate two people believed to be U.S. citizens who were aboard a yacht that was hijacked by three escaped prisoners from Grenada.<\/p>\n
The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Friday that they were working on leads \u201cthat suggest\u201d the two occupants of the yacht might have been killed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis investigation is in its infancy stage,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n
The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association identified the owners as Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel. It said they were \u201cveteran cruisers\u201d and longtime members of the association, calling them \u201cwarmhearted and capable.\u201d A relative of Hendry didn\u2019t return a message seeking comment Saturday.<\/p>\n
The association said a cruising skipper had contacted the association about a member\u2019s yacht, Simplicity, that was found \u201canchored and abandoned\u201d off a beach on the island of St. Vincent.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners \u2026 were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence,\u201d the association said in a statement Thursday.<\/p>\n
The association said Hendry and Brandel had sailed the yacht in last year\u2019s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.<\/p>\n
