{"id":421726,"date":"2023-11-04T08:43:25","date_gmt":"2023-11-04T05:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=421726"},"modified":"2023-11-04T08:43:25","modified_gmt":"2023-11-04T05:43:25","slug":"at-least-six-dead-in-italy-as-heavy-rain-high-winds-sweep-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/at-least-six-dead-in-italy-as-heavy-rain-high-winds-sweep-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"At least six dead in Italy as heavy rain, high winds sweep Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">At least six people have been killed in central Tuscany when Storm Ciaran swept through Italy after causing chaos in more western parts of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani said that six people died as torrential rain fell from the coastal city of Livorno to the inland valley of Mugello on Friday and rivers burst their banks flooding towns and villages.<\/p>\n<p>The dead included two elderly people from the city of Prato, north of Florence, according to Italian news agency ANSA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">One person was also killed in Albania after they lost control of the car they were driving, bringing the storm\u2019s death toll across the continent to 14.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Civil Protection authorities said that 200 millimetres (nearly eight inches) of rain fell in three hours on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Giani said it was the heaviest amount of rain recorded in the last 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a wave of water bombs without precedence,\u201d Giani told Italian news channel Sky TG24.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2460884\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2460884\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-2460884\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/2023-11-03T183826Z_381850086_RC2P54A9ISB8_RTRMADP_3_EUROPE-WEATHER-ITALY-1699073533.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C433&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Aerial view of flooded streets in the aftermath of Storm Ciaran, in Campi Bisenzio, in Tuscany region\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2460884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Tuscany was deluged with record rainfall [Yara Nardi\/Reuters]<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Climate scientists say human-induced\u00a0climate change has led to heavier rainfall during storms like Ciaran, often resulting in more severe damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the conditions are different than 20 years ago, it is obvious to everyone,\u201d Nello Musumeci, the government\u2019s minister for civil protection, told Sky TG24, noting that weather systems in Italy have become more tropical in nature.<\/p>\n<p>At one point there were concerns the\u00a0River Arno could flood the historic city of Florence, but the high water point passed without major incident.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Source: Al Jazeera<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least six people have been killed in central Tuscany when Storm Ciaran swept through Italy after causing chaos in more western parts of Europe.
