SONNA – Seven people were killed when part of a mosque filled with hundreds of worshippers collapsed in Nigeria\u2019s northern city of Zaria, in Kaduna state, with several others injured, officials said.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred as hundreds of faithful observed afternoon prayers on Friday at the city\u2019s central mosque, Zaria Emirate Council spokesman Abdullahi Kwarbai said.<\/p>\n
\u201cFour bodies were found initially, and then three others were found after the rescue team searched the collapsed mosque,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
State officials said the mosque was constructed in the 1830s.<\/p>\n
Twenty-three people were sent to hospital, the state Emergency Management Agency said.<\/p>\n
Videos apparently recorded at the scene showed a wide opening where a part of the roof fell in.<\/p>\n
Kaduna state Governor Uba Sani ordered an immediate investigation into the disaster and promised to assist those affected by the \u201cheartbreaking incident\u201d.<\/p>\n
The incident follows\u00a0more than a dozen building collapses in the West African nation\u00a0in the last year alone.<\/p>\n
Authorities often blame such disasters on\u00a0a failure by officials to enforce building safety regulations\u00a0and on poor maintenance and substandard construction materials.<\/p>\n
