SONNA –\u00a0Tens of thousands of protesters have rallied in cities and towns across Israel for the 23rd week, protesting controversial plans by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government to\u00a0overhaul the judiciary\u00a0as well as deadly violence hitting Palestinian communities in the country.<\/p>\n
The mass demonstrations, which drew some 100,000 people on Saturday, began in January shortly after Netanyahu\u2019s far-right government was sworn in.<\/p>\n
Gaining momentum and seeing large turnouts of more than 200,000 demonstrators at times, protest organisers have said\u00a0they will not give up\u00a0until the government cancels the proposed legal changes rather than\u00a0delaying them.<\/p>\n
In central Tel Aviv, protester Michal Gat said: \u201cOur country is being captured by extreme people\u2026 we\u2019re being held hostage\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s super important for the Israeli people to keep Israel a democracy,\u201d the 47-year-old tech worker told the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n
Some people at the protest also held signs criticising government inaction over a soaring crime wave that has affected Palestinian citizens of Israel.<\/p>\n
