{"id":417310,"date":"2023-05-28T08:46:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T05:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=417310"},"modified":"2023-05-28T08:46:20","modified_gmt":"2023-05-28T05:46:20","slug":"iraq-announces-plans-for-17-billion-transportation-project-linking-asia-to-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/iraq-announces-plans-for-17-billion-transportation-project-linking-asia-to-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraq announces plans for $17 billion transportation project linking Asia to Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IRBIL, Iraq (SONNA) \u2014 Iraq\u2019s prime minister on Saturday announced plans for a $17 billion regional transportation project intended to facilitate the flow of goods from Asia to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made at a one<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>day conference in Baghdad that convened transport ministers and representatives from Iraq, the Gulf countries, Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>Sudani said the planned Development Road project would facilitate the movement of goods from the Gulf to Europe by way of the Grand Faw Port in Basra, in southern Iraq, which would be connected to Turkey, then to Europe, through a network of railways and highways.<\/p>\n<p>A centerpiece of the project will be the development of the Grand Faw Port and a \u201csmart industrial city\u201d adjacent to it, al<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>Sudani said.<\/p>\n<p>The planned project, which would involve the construction of about 1,200 km (about 745 miles) of railways and highways, will be \u201can economic lifeline and a promising opportunity for the convergence of interests, history, and cultures,\u201d said al<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>Sudani, adding it will \u201cmake our countries a source for modern industries and goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not say how the project would be financed but noted that Iraq would \u201crely heavily on cooperation&#8230; with brotherly and friendly nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The countries participating in Saturday<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s conference agreed to establish joint technical committees to move the project forward.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s relations with the Gulf countries have been strained in recent decades, as Iran<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>backed militias rose in prominence in Iraq in the wake of the U.S.<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein and opened a power vacuum in the country.<\/p>\n<p>However, there have been signs of improving relations with the country<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s neighbors.
