The pre-sunrise to sunset fast lasts anywhere from 12 to 18 hours, depending on where you are in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Muslims believe that\u00a0Ramadan\u00a0is the month when the first verses of the holy book\u00a0Quran\u00a0were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad more than 1,400 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The fast entails abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual relations during daylight hours to achieve greater \u201ctaqwa\u201d, or consciousness of God.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Why does Ramadan start on different dates every year?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Ramadan begins 10 to 12 days earlier each year. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar Hijri calendar with months that are 29 or 30 days long.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the first day of fasting in Mecca will be on Thursday,\u00a0March 23, Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year by 11 days, Ramadan will be observed twice in the year 2030 \u2013 first beginning on January 5 and then starting on December 25.<\/p>\n<p>The next time Ramadan will start after March 23 will be 33 years from now \u2013 in the year 2056.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-2132311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/INTERACTIVE-Ramadan-2023-33-year-calendar-2056.png?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C770&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE - Ramadan 2023 - 33 year calendar 2056\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Fasting, iftar times around the world<\/h2>\n<p>The number of daylight hours varies across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Muslims living in the world\u2019s southernmost countries, such as Chile or New Zealand, will fast for an average of 12 hours while those living in northernmost countries, such as Iceland or Greenland, will have 17-plus hours fasts.<\/p>\n<p>For Muslims living in the Northern Hemisphere, the number of fasting hours will be a bit shorter this year and will continue to decrease until 2031, which is the year Ramadan will encompass the winter solstice \u2013 the shortest day of the year.
