{"id":415227,"date":"2023-03-16T08:50:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T05:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=415227"},"modified":"2023-03-16T08:50:10","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T05:50:10","slug":"us-demands-tiktok-owners-to-sell-stakes-or-face-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/us-demands-tiktok-owners-to-sell-stakes-or-face-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"US demands TikTok owners to sell stakes or face ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WASHINGTON (SONNA) &#8211; <\/strong>The Biden administration has demanded the Chinese owners of TikTok to sell their stakes in the popular video-sharing app or risk it being banned in the US, a local media outlet reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The demand was made by the US Treasury-led Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, calling the move a \u201cmajor shift\u201d in the administration\u2019s policy against TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>It reported that 60% of TikTok parent company ByteDance\u2019s shares are owned by global investors, 20% by employees and 20% by its founders, citing TikTok executives.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok responded by saying that the sale will not address the perceived security risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf protecting national security is the objective, divestment doesn\u2019t solve the problem: a change in ownership would not impose any new restrictions on data flows or access,\u201d TikTok spokeswoman Brooke Oberwetter said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way to address concerns about national security is with the transparent, U.S.-based protection of U.S. user data and systems, with robust third-party monitoring, vetting and verification, which we are already implementing,\u201d Oberwetter added.<\/p>\n<p>The White House have yet to comment on the report.<\/p>\n<p>Having launched in 2016, the Chinese-owned video-sharing app became massively popular across the world in recent years, reaching 755 million global users in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Two-thirds of American teens are now TikTok users.<\/p>\n<p>But it has been criticized for allowing the Chinese government to access users\u2019 sensitive personal data, including location and browsing history.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Source:Anadolu<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (SONNA) &#8211; The Biden administration has demanded the Chinese owners of TikTok to sell their stakes in the popular video-sharing app or risk it being banned in the US, a local media outlet reported Wednesday.
