\nformally assumed office as the Police Commissioner for the African Union Transition
\nMission in Somalia (ATMIS).<\/p>\n
CP. Hillary Sao Kanu, from Sierra Leone, arrived in Mogadishu on Thursday, to
\ncommence her duties. She replaces Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP),
\nAugustine Magnus Kailie, also from Sierra Leone, who concluded his tour of duty in
\nOctober last year.
\nShe was officially received on Friday at the ATMIS Police Headquarters in
\nMogadishu where she inspected a guard of honour mounted by ATMIS police
\npersonnel.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy priorities are to build on what has already been achieved and sustain the
\nmomentum to ensure we achieve our goal of ensuring security and stability in
\nSomalia,\u201d said CP Kanu in an interview.
\nCP. Kanu, also emphasized that the ATMIS Police component will collaborate with
\ntheir counterparts, the Somali Police Force to achieve the mission\u2019s objectives and
\nbuild capacity through training, mentoring and advising.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn collaboration with the Somali Police force, ATMIS police have maintained peace
\nand security in Somalia and that\u2019s what we will build on,\u201d she added.
\nATMIS Police, is one of the three components of the AU peace support operations in
\nSomalia, mandated to provide operational support and capacity building to the
\nSomali Police Force (SPF).<\/p>\n
CP. Kano brings to the mission a wealth of knowledge and experience spanning over
\n30 years in the police service, having joined the Sierra Leone Police Force in July
\n1992.<\/p>\n
Prior to her appointment as the ATMIS Police Commissioner, she was the Director of
\nSupport Services at Sierra Leone Police Headquarters. She previously served at
\nUNAMID, the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, Sudan.<\/p>\n
