{"id":414553,"date":"2023-03-02T10:07:40","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T07:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=414553"},"modified":"2023-03-02T10:08:20","modified_gmt":"2023-03-02T07:08:20","slug":"qatar-renewed-its-commitment-to-peace-in-somalia-at-a-6-party-meeting-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/qatar-renewed-its-commitment-to-peace-in-somalia-at-a-6-party-meeting-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Qatar renewed its commitment to peace in Somalia at a 6-party meeting in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SONNA &#8211; Qatar has renewed its commitment to peace in Somalia during a six-party meeting held in the United States to tackle counterterrorism in the African country, confirming a follow-up meeting in Doha in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Parties at the Washington meeting have agreed to reconvene in Doha \u201cwithin the next three months for ongoing discussions and to take stock of progress.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the US State Department said the meeting on Tuesday dealt with \u201cSomalia\u2019s security, state-building, development, and humanitarian priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The participants at the meeting included Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey discussed how to better support Somalia\u2019s fight against Al-Shabaab and prepare for the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia drawdown, and agreed to strengthen coordination of international security assistance,\u201d the State Department statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Translating to\u00a0<em>\u2018The Youth\u2019\u00a0<\/em>in Arabic, Al Shabaab first emerged as the extremist youth wing of the now-defunct Union of Islamic Courts in Somalia, which ruled Mogadishu in 2006 before Ethiopian forces drove them out.<\/p>\n<section class=\"entry-content\" title=\"\">Currently, the embargo is set to last until 17 November this year.Representatives at the Washington meeting also voiced backing for political reconciliation in Somalia as well as steps to finalise the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe partners encourage and support Somalia\u2019s National Consultative Council (NCC) process in promoting political reconciliation and to delineate the roles and responsibilities of levels of government in Somalia, including by finalising the constitution,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Officials also tapped into the ongoing conflict between forces from Somalia\u2019s semi-autonomous region of Somaliland and Dhulbahante militia in the Somali city of Lascaanood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe partners expressed concern about the ongoing conflict in and around Lascanood and called on all parties to adhere to the ceasefire, de-escalate, allow unhindered humanitarian access, and engage in constructive and peaceful dialogue,\u201d the joint communique read.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the worsening drought in Somalia has been a key issue of concern and has driven out thousands to neighbouring areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey welcomed support along with international actors to meet the immediate needs of the Somali people, while also strengthening Somalia\u2019s ability to withstand future climate shocks,\u201d the parties said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the\u00a0UN\u00a0said that more than 755,000 people have been internally displaced in Somalia because of the country\u2019s severe drought, raising the total to one million since January 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The dry season is the worst in 40 years, with more fears over a rise in famine and displacement.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0April\u00a0last year, Qatar announced plans to invest $1.5 million as part of an emergency response and \u201cresilience-building\u201d in\u00a0Somalia.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><strong><em>Source: Doha News<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SONNA &#8211; Qatar has renewed its commitment to peace in Somalia during a six-party meeting held in the United States to tackle counterterrorism in the African country, confirming a follow-up meeting in Doha in the coming months.
