SONNA – The United States military has said it killed a \u201csenior\u201d ISIL (ISIS) leader in a raid in northeastern Syria as Washington continues its targeting of the group.<\/p>\n
The Middle East-based US Central Command (CENTCOM) of the American military announced the operation on Friday, saying that four soldiers were injured during the raid, which was carried out in coordination with the Kurdish-led\u00a0Syrian Democratic Forces\u00a0(SDF).<\/p>\n
The military said \u201can explosion on target resulted in four US service members and one working dog wounded\u201d during a helicopter raid in northeastern Syria on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe targeted ISIS senior leader, Hamza al-Homsi, was killed,\u201d CENTCOM said.<\/p>\n
Later on Friday White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said al-Homsi \u201cwas overseeing the group\u2019s deadly terrorist network in eastern Syria\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added that the four soldiers and the dog were in stable condition and receiving treatment in a US medical facility in Iraq.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo civilians were on the target or injured in the operation,\u201d a CENTCOM spokesperson said, adding that another \u201cISIS assassination cell leader\u201d was killed in a separate raid on Thursday night, without providing further details.<\/p>\n
The raid came less than a month after US forces killed Bilal al-Sudani, an\u00a0ISIL leader in Somalia, whom Washington described as a \u201ckey facilitator for ISIS\u2019s global network\u201d.<\/p>\n
US forces killed ISIL\u2019s first top leader\u00a0Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi\u00a0in a raid in northern Syria in 2019.\u00a0 His successor Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi\u00a0was also killed\u00a0in Syria in a similar US operation last year.<\/p>\n
ISIL controlled large swaths of land in Iraq and Syria from 2014 until its\u00a0territorial defeat\u00a0late in 2017. During that time, the group, which had declared a \u201ccaliphate\u201d and inspired attacks on civilian targets across the world, attracted thousands of foreign fighters, including from Europe and the US.<\/p>\n
