{"id":412375,"date":"2023-01-21T06:29:28","date_gmt":"2023-01-21T06:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=412375"},"modified":"2023-01-21T06:29:28","modified_gmt":"2023-01-21T06:29:28","slug":"australian-park-rangers-spot-a-giant-toad-deep-in-the-rainforest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/australian-park-rangers-spot-a-giant-toad-deep-in-the-rainforest\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian park rangers spot a giant toad deep in the rainforest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">SYDNEY, (SONNA) &#8211; Australian park rangers believe they have stumbled upon a record-breaking giant toad deep in a rainforest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">Dubbed &#8220;Toadzilla&#8221;, the cane toad, an invasive species that poses a threat to Australia&#8217;s ecosystem, was spotted by &#8220;shocked&#8221; park ranger Kylee Gray during a patrol in Conway National Park in Queensland state on Jan. 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">Gray and her colleagues caught the animal and brought it back to their office, where it weighed in at a 2.7 kg (6 pounds).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">Guinness World Records lists the largest toad at 2.65 kg (5.8 pounds), a 1991 record set by a Swedish pet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">\u201cWe considered naming her Connie after Conway National Park but Toadzilla was the one that just kept getting thrown out there, so that kind of stuck,\u201d Gray told state broadcaster ABC on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">Gray\u2019s colleague, senior park ranger Barry Nolan, told Reuters the animal was euthanised due to its \u201cecological impact\u201d \u2014 the usual fate for the toads across Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">Cane toads were introduced to Australia in 1935 to control cane beetles and other pests but their population exploded and with no natural predators they have become a threat to Australian species, Nolan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__full_width__ekUdw body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">\u201cA female cane toad like potentially Toadzilla would lay up to 35,000 eggs. So their capacity to reproduce is quite staggering.
