US President Joe Biden and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed the situation in Ukraine over the phone Sunday, according to a White House statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe leaders discussed ongoing diplomatic and deterrence efforts in response to Russia\u2019s continued military buildup on Ukraine\u2019s borders,\u201d said the statement.<\/p>\n
Both sides reaffirmed their support for Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/p>\n
They agreed to remain in touch and will continue to consult with their allies and partners, including Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Russian forces in 2014 invaded the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and annexed the Crimean Peninsula.<\/p>\n
Moscow is now said to have amassed thousands of troops near Ukraine\u2019s borders, prompting fears that it could be planning another military offensive.<\/p>\n
The US and its allies have warned of an imminent attack and threatened Russia with \u201csevere consequences\u201d if it further invades Ukraine.<\/p>\n
But Moscow has denied that it is preparing to invade Ukraine and said its troops are there for exercises.<\/p>\n
