{"id":410513,"date":"2022-02-02T08:36:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T08:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=410513"},"modified":"2022-02-02T08:36:00","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T08:36:00","slug":"guinea-bissau-coup-attempt-linked-to-drug-trafficking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/guinea-bissau-coup-attempt-linked-to-drug-trafficking\/","title":{"rendered":"Guinea Bissau coup attempt linked to drug trafficking"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Officials in Guinea Bissau have linked the \u201cfailed\u201d coup attempt on Monday to an escalation of the campaign against drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Moments after government forces retained control, President Umaro Sissoco Embal\u00f3 said \u201cisolated elements\u201d opposed to government reshuffles and seeking control of trafficking channels may have tried to oust him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He addressed the nation in a short statement before answering questions from journalists at the presidential offices by telling the population that \u201ceverything is under control\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"teasers-row\">\n<div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div class=\"col-1-1 medium-col-1-1 large-col-1-1\">\n<div class=\"col-1-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The events of Monday, he said, took place a week after a government reshuffle that was contested by the party led by the prime minister and three days after rumours flew that army Chief of Staff Biagu\u00ea Na N&#8217;Tan, who is in Spain for treatment, had died.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cGuinea-Bissau is in mourning, because brave children were killed today for the ambition of two or three people who think that this country has no right to live in peace,\u201d he said, without providing details on the death toll.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cThey are dead, but I don&#8217;t know how many,\u201d he said, adding that no government official had dead or been wounded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only the military who are involved in this action, but individuals who are under investigation for drug trafficking\u201d, he stated, adding that the \u201cattempted coup d&#8217;\u00e9tat\u201d had to do with his fight against drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>Alongside Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam, deputy prime minister Soares Samb\u00fa, interior minister Botch\u00e9 Cand\u00e9 and defence minister, Sandji Fati, he added that an intense fire fight had ensued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>&#8220;It took five hours for the Armed Forces to rescue their supreme commander,&#8221; he said, congratulating the defence and security forces that &#8220;managed to prevent this attack on democracy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The link of the attempted coup to drug trafficking sets Guinea-Bissau apart from its neighbours Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso, three countries where the army seized power recently, citing poor leadership by civilian governments in addressing insecurity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<h2>Drug\u00a0trafficking<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The military in Guinea-Bissau has been sanctioned in the past for aiding trafficking. In August, the US State Department announced a reward offer of up to $5 million for information that could lead to the arrest and or conviction of Guinea-Bissau national Antonio Indjai, a former head of the country\u2019s armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>Guinea-Bissau&#8217;s General Antonio Indjai, who has been dubbed the figurehead of a so-called &#8220;cocaine coup&#8221; in 2012. He lives in the shadows in defiance of a US bounty on his head.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The former general has been the subject of a United Nations travel ban since May 2012, \u201cas a result of his participation in an April 2012 coup d\u2019\u00e9tat in Guinea-Bissau,\u201d according to a file published on him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>The president\u2019s speech did not cite whether senior military chiefs had a role in the coup attempt, but he suggested the fight against drugs was causing jitters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He added that he found it hard to believe that \u201cwe were going to get to this point or the children of Guinea would be in a position to promote yet another act of violence\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cI would rather have them come to me and raise their problems,\u201d said the president, recalling that \u201cpower is conquered at the polls\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>But he said that some individuals allegedly involved in the abortive coup had been detained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-wrapper\">\n<p>He also appealed to the international community to continue supporting Guinea-Bissau.<br \/>\nSource: The Nation<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Officials in Guinea Bissau have linked the \u201cfailed\u201d coup attempt on Monday to an escalation of the campaign against drug trafficking.
