{"id":409929,"date":"2022-01-20T11:13:47","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T11:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=409929"},"modified":"2022-01-20T11:23:40","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T11:23:40","slug":"eu-calls-on-israel-to-stop-demolitions-in-east-jerusalem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/eu-calls-on-israel-to-stop-demolitions-in-east-jerusalem\/","title":{"rendered":"EU calls on Israel to stop demolitions in East Jerusalem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS <strong>(SONNA)<\/strong>: The European Union has urged Israel to halt demolitions in occupied East Jerusalem, calling the displacement of Palestinians illegal under international law.<\/p>\n<p>The EU urged Israel not to proceed with its plan to construct 1,450 settlement-housing units between Har Homa and Givat Hamatos, according to a statement issued late Wednesday night by Peter Stano, the lead spokesperson for the bloc\u2019s diplomatic service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSettlement expansion, demolitions, and evictions are illegal under international law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He called the increasing number of demolitions and evictions in the West Bank a \u201cworrying trend,\u201d and stressed that the possibility of further evictions of Palestinian families would fuel tensions.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s construction plan \u201cwould further undermine the possibility of Jerusalem serving as the future capital of both States and to halt all settlement activities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Israeli authorities demolished the Saliyeh family\u2019s home after forced evacuation in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The family said they had lived in the home since 1948, after being expelled from the Ein Karen neighborhood of West Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is seen as an occupied territory under international law, thus making all Jewish settlements there illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Like Turkiye and much of the international community, the EU does not recognize Israel\u2019s sovereignty over the territories it has occupied since 1967.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2001, the bloc has repeatedly called on Israel to end all settlement activities and to dismantle the already existing ones.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Anadolu Agency<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS (SONNA): The European Union has urged Israel to halt demolitions in occupied East Jerusalem, calling the displacement of Palestinians illegal under international law.
