{"id":408176,"date":"2021-12-17T07:56:35","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T07:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=408176"},"modified":"2021-12-17T07:56:35","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T07:56:35","slug":"congo-declares-end-to-latest-ebola-outbreak-in-the-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/congo-declares-end-to-latest-ebola-outbreak-in-the-east\/","title":{"rendered":"Congo declares end to latest Ebola outbreak in the east"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congolese officials on Thursday announced an end to an Ebola outbreak that had killed at least six people since October in the latest health challenge confronting the country<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s restive east.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent outbreak erupted in North Kivu province, the same part of Congo where more than 2,200 people died during an earlier Ebola epidemic that began in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Congolese health workers had been able to \u201climit widespread infections and save lives,\u201d Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization\u2019s regional director for Africa, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrucial lessons are being learned and applied with every outbreak experience,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that the first case from the latest outbreak \u201clikely represented a new flare<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>up of the 2018\u20132020 Ebola outbreak due persistence of the virus in the community,\u201d WHO said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have previously documented Ebola survivors who inadvertently infected others long after they had recovered. For example, health officials have warned that the virus can persist in male survivors<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--closing-single\">\u2019<\/span> semen for more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>The newly ended outbreak marked the 13th time Congo has battled Ebola, including another outbreak in North Kivu between February and May of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The disease has proved particularly difficult to prevent in North Kivu, which is home to a myriad of armed groups.<\/p>\n<p>While the 2018<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>2020 pandemic marked the first time that vaccines could be given to those at risk, insecurity in rural areas prevented health workers from safely accessing many.
