And now, 76 years later, it continues to serve the peoples of the world. Some of<br \/>\nthe challenges it was created to address have not changed, unfortunately. Conflict,<br \/>\npoverty, hunger at the same time, new challenges have arisen COVID-19 and climate<br \/>\nchange, to name just two examples,\u201d the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative<br \/>\nfor Somalia, James Swan, said at a virtual press conference in Mogadishu.<br \/>\n\u201cHere in Somalia,\u201d he continued, \u201cthe United Nations has been a steadfast partner of<br \/>\nthe country since its independence, dating back decades, and we expect the partnership<br \/>\nwith Somalia to continue across a wide range of areas in the future.\u201d<br \/>\nThe senior-most UN official in Somalia was addressing the media two days after UN Day,<br \/>\nwhich is observed annually on 24 October.<br \/>\nIn 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Franscisco at the UN Conference on<br \/>\nInternational Organization to draw up the UN Charter, which is the founding document<br \/>\nof the United Nations.<br \/>\nThe UN Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 and came into force on 24 October that<br \/>\nyear, when it had been ratified by a majority of signatories \u2013 and officially bringing the<\/p>\n<p>UN into existence.
