{"id":405832,"date":"2021-06-20T10:22:21","date_gmt":"2021-06-20T10:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=405832"},"modified":"2021-06-20T10:22:21","modified_gmt":"2021-06-20T10:22:21","slug":"amisom-commemorates-the-international-day-for-the-elimination-of-sexual-violence-in-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/amisom-commemorates-the-international-day-for-the-elimination-of-sexual-violence-in-conflict\/","title":{"rendered":"AMISOM commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Mogadishu, 20 June 2021 \u2013 <\/span><span data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">The African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM, has commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict with a commitment to address conflict-related sexual violence in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Senior AMISOM officials, women representatives, human rights defenders, peacebuilders, traditional and religious leaders met in Baidoa and Kismayo to commemorate the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">AMISOM continues to support the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">stablisation<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> efforts in Somalia and to strengthen the capacity of the Somali Police Force and communities to address sexual and gender-based violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\">\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">In <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Baidoa<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, the AMISOM Police Gender Officer, Inspector of Police <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Tracilla<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Nguzi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, said commemorating the day was important to create awareness and support to survivors of sexual violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\">\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cConflict exposes women and children to the risk of sexual violence.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> In Somalia, victims of sexual violence include women, children, vulnerable and minority groups,\u201d said Inspector of Police <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Nguzi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\">\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">A youth representative from <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Baidoa<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Mohamed Nur, said the commitment to eliminate sexual violence would safeguard the lives o<\/span><span class=\"s2\">f the vulnerable groups such as women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\">\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cSexual violence makes life difficult for vulnerable women. So, this day is an awareness-raising day that is worth commemorating in Southwest,\u201d said Mohamed Nur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\">\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">While commemorating the day in Kismayo, the AMISOM Pr<\/span><span class=\"s2\">otection Officer, Gloria <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Jaase<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, noted the importance of combating conflict-related sexual violence, mainly affecting women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\">\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cSexual violence in conflict is a weapon of war. It is an international crime, and we need to scale up efforts to establi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">sh strategies, laws and policies that end impunity and hold those perpetrators accountable for sexual violence against women and girls in conflict,\u201d said <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Jaase<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\">\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">She also encouraged the participants to advocate for the empowerment of women and girls, and t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">o address violations against women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">The Director of Children and Family Affairs in the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Jubaland<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> State\u2019s Ministry of Women and Human Rights, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Abdikadir<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Abdi Yare, said it was essential to raise awareness about sexual violence to all stakeholders including t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">raditional elders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cDuring clan clashes, there is violence against women and girls, including rape and killings. Our elders need to know that this is an international crime, and they should not resolve such cases through traditional justice mechanisms,\u201d s<\/span><span class=\"s2\">aid <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Abdikadir<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">The AMISOM Gender Officer in Kismayo, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Oyedele<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Kazee<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, underlined the need to end conflicts that increase the risk of sexual violence against women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s2\">Declared in June 2015, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violenc<\/span><span class=\"s2\">e in Conflict is marked to raise awareness of the need to end conflict-related sexual violence.
