{"id":405813,"date":"2021-06-18T13:03:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T13:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=405813"},"modified":"2021-06-18T13:03:00","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T13:03:00","slug":"mogadishu-residents-call-for-protection-of-children-from-harmful-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/mogadishu-residents-call-for-protection-of-children-from-harmful-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"Mogadishu residents call for protection of children from harmful practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Mogadishu: \u2013 <\/span><span data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">A multitude of<\/span> <span data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">people gathered in the Capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, on Wednesday to celebrate the International Day of the African Child, with a rallying call for government policies to protect children&#8217;s rights and welfare.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">The event, supported by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), was attended by government officials, civil society activists, political players and ordinary residents to discuss issues affecting Somali children in line with the objectives of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s14\">The Day of the African Child is celebrated every year on June 16. The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) recognized the importance of the Day of the African Child as an advocacy tool for promoting children\u2019s rights and advancing children\u2019s welfare. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s14\">\u201cWe need to discuss issues affecting our children by all means. It is our responsibility to protect the children from acts of violence, stop them from accessing firearms and fight against their recruitment as child soldiers. We need the adoption of policies on early childhood education and free education,\u201d said <\/span><span class=\"s14\">Mursal<\/span> <span class=\"s14\">Buule<\/span><span class=\"s14\">, Child Protection Coordinator at the Somalia Ministry of <\/span><span class=\"s14\">Defence<\/span><span class=\"s14\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s14\">Nuurto<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> Ahmed Mohamed, Human Rights and Gender Officer at the Ministry of <\/span><span class=\"s14\">Defence<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> said Somalia has made tremendous progress against harmful practices such as female genital mutilation as well as early childhood marriages, both of which violate children\u2019s rights and pose serious health complications to the girl child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s14\">She also praised efforts made at curbing recruitment of child soldiers, which previously was rampant in <\/span><span class=\"s14\">Somalia<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> but which has now been curtailed due to government interventions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s14\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s14\">In regards to<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> recruitment of child soldiers, I want to thank the Child Protection Unit (CPU) of the Ministry of <\/span><span class=\"s14\">Defence<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> for their good work that took them across the country to deregister children enlisted into the forces. They also monitor recruitment exercises to ensure no children are recruited. I congratulate them for a job well done,\u201d Ms. Mohamed said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s14\">Khadro<\/span> <span class=\"s14\">Isse<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> Mohamed, a senior official from the Ministry of <\/span><span class=\"s14\">Labour<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> and Social Affairs praised AMISOM and the government for their close cooperation and coordination in ensuring children are protected against abuse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s13\"><span class=\"s14\">\u201cThe role of the Somali government is to provide effective child-friendly national legislative, policy and institutional framework that protect Somali children against child recruitment as well as to protect their other rights.
