Somalia has yet to receive any Covid-19 vaccines; Dr. Abikar said last week that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sntvnews1\/status\/1365302490778984449\">the first doses would arrive in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With a population of more than 15 million, Somalia has one of the world\u2019s most vulnerable health systems. Just a quarter of the population has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/feature-stories\/detail\/health-for-all-is-somalia-s-answer-to-covid-19-and-future-threats-to-health\">access to essential health services<\/a>, according to the World Health Organization. Besides Covid-19 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/31\/world\/africa\/Mogadishu-attack-hotel-shabab.html\">the threat of the extremist group Al Shabab<\/a>, the country is also facing a humanitarian crisis, with flooding and desert locusts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/02\/1084952\">exacerbating food insecurity<\/a>\u00a0for 2.6 million people, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitalizations, new cases, and deaths have all risen in the Horn of Africa nation in recent weeks, with the capital, Mogadishu,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OCHASom\/status\/1365918429933424640\">hit particularly badly<\/a>. Somalia has so far reported 7,257 cases and 239 deaths from the virus, but with limited testing and data collection mechanisms, health experts say that it is hard to accurately assess the true reach of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, prominent Somalis \u2014 including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sntvnews1\/status\/1363440593800736769\">the singer and actress Fadumo Ali Nakruma<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 have died after contracting the coronavirus.
