{"id":401501,"date":"2020-11-01T09:31:07","date_gmt":"2020-11-01T06:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=401501"},"modified":"2020-11-01T09:31:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-01T06:31:07","slug":"on-resolution-1325-anniversary-federal-government-and-united-nations-congratulate-somali-women-for-their-contributions-to-peace-and-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/on-resolution-1325-anniversary-federal-government-and-united-nations-congratulate-somali-women-for-their-contributions-to-peace-and-security\/","title":{"rendered":"On Resolution 1325 Anniversary, Federal Government and United Nations Congratulate Somali Women for their Contributions to Peace and Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mogadishu<strong>(SONNA)<\/strong>-As the world celebrates the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, the Federal Government of Somalia and the United Nations today congratulated Somali women for their achievements and stressed the added value of their political participation and representation.<\/p>\n<p>Spearheaded by women leaders and organizations, the ground-breaking Resolution 1325, adopted on 31 October 2000, was the first to recognize women\u2019s leadership to achieve international peace and security and their contributions to conflict prevention and resolution, peacekeeping and peacebuilding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe women of Somalia have contributed immensely to the country\u2019s progress and development. We call on federal and state authorities, political leaders, civil society groups, and international partners to uphold the centrality of Somali women in peace, security and governance,\u201d said the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current election season presents an opportunity to bolster women\u2019s role in Somalia\u2019s peace and political processes. We urge Somalia\u2019s leaders not only to ensure the 30 per cent quota for women in the forthcoming parliamentary elections but also to fulfil the commitment to 30 percent representation of women in electoral management bodies,\u201d Mr. Swan added.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Somali women account for 24 per cent of Somalia\u2019s parliamentary seats.<\/p>\n<p>Somalia\u2019s Minister of Women and Human Rights Development, Hanifa Mohamed Ibrahim, lauded the role women have played in Somali politics and peacemaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Asha Hagi Elmi becoming the first Somali woman to sign a peace agreement in 2004 to the campaign for women\u2019s representation in the 2012 and 2016 parliamentary processes, the gains made so far provide a foundation for further progress.
