UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is \u201cshocked by a horrific attack\u201d on a school in Cameroon\u2019s city of Kumba that claimed at least seven lives and injured 12 others, his spokesman said in a statement late Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe attack is another disturbing reminder of the exacting heavy toll on civilians, including children, many of whom have been deprived of their right to education. Attacks on education facilities are a grave violation of children\u2019s rights,\u201d read the statement by Stephane Dujarric.<\/p>\n
Guterres extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, wished a swift recovery to the injured and urged Cameroonian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.<\/p>\n
He called on \u201call armed actors to refrain from attacks against civilians and to respect international humanitarian and international human rights law.\u201d<\/p>\n
The UN chief also strongly urged the parties to answer his call for a global cease-fire.<\/p>\n
Guterres reiterated \u201cthe availability of the United Nations to support an inclusive dialogue process leading to a resolution of the crisis in the North-West and South West regions of Cameroon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Following the incident, several opinion leaders took on social media with the hashtag #EndAnglophoneCrisis to denounce the attacks and urge the government and secessionist to solve the crisis which has affected hundreds of thousands.<\/p>\n
The Central African country has been marred by protests and violence since 2016, with residents in English-speaking regions saying they have been marginalized for decades by the central government and the French-speaking majority.<\/p>\n
They are calling for independence or a federal state.<\/p>\n
Violence in the Anglophone regions over the last three years has claimed an estimated 3,000 lives and caused the displacement of over 730,000 civilians, according to the Human Rights Watch.<\/p>\n
In June, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said for a second year running Cameroon topped the list as the most neglected crisis on the planet in 2019.<\/p>\n
