Several people, including a police officer, have been killed in clashes between police and protesters following the announcement of provisional results of Guinea’s presidential poll, local media reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Provisional results are showing incumbent President Alpha Conde in the lead, according to the country’s Independent National Election Commission (CENI).<\/p>\n
Mamadou Camara, a police spokesperson, said a cop was killed by demonstrators in the capital Conakry.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was hit with a stone on the head and knocked out by the demonstrators,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
At least three people were shot dead in Conakry\u2019s T8 neighborhood and two more in the capital\u2019s Wanindara area, while several others suffered bullet wounds, according to local website africaguinee.com.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the government said violence was triggered by \u201cthe proclamation of the alleged victory\u201d of the leader of the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) Cellou Dalein Diallo on Monday night.<\/p>\n
The government offered condolences to the families of the victims and urged all citizens and political parties to show \u201ccalm and restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n
Diallo\u2019s claim of victory in Sunday\u2019s presidential election was immediately shot down by the government.<\/p>\n
The opposition candidate has denounced the ongoing violence after security forces stormed the UFGG\u2019s office on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one can commit such illegal and violent acts against the UFDG headquarters without being ordered to do so by Alpha Conde,\u201d he said in a video posted on Twitter.<\/p>\n
He said the attack was aimed at destroying evidence of electoral fraud. \u201cLast I heard they were destroying everything inside the building. No one can do this unless it is under the instruction of Alpha Conde,\u201d said Diallo.<\/p>\n
On the eve of the election, UN chief Antonio Guterres called on \u201call national stakeholders to ensure that the polls are conducted in an inclusive and peaceful manner.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also called on security forces to act responsibly with utmost restraint and urged political leaders and their parties to resolve any disputes that may arise through legal means.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
