{"id":401237,"date":"2020-10-12T14:33:24","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T11:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=401237"},"modified":"2021-03-24T09:18:34","modified_gmt":"2021-03-24T09:18:34","slug":"turkey-digs-deeper-into-somalia-infrastructure-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/turkey-digs-deeper-into-somalia-infrastructure-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey digs deeper into Somalia infrastructure projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Turkish ports operator Albayrak and the federal government of Somalia have signed an agreement that grants the company a new 14-year concession to manage the Port of Mogadishu.<\/p>\n<p>The signing in Mogadishu followed a series of discussions that revised revenue-sharing arrangements between the two parties.<\/p>\n<p>The accord signed by Somalia\u2019s Ports Minister Mariam Aweys Jama says the Turkish firm will retain an exclusive terminal and marine services operation at the port.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-ad\"><\/div>\n<p>The previous concession was signed in 2013 and was to remain in force for 20 years but had to be renegotiated as part of Somalia\u2019s economic restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new concession mandates the injection of $50 million over five years for rehabilitation and investment to upgrade the port amid increasing trade flows,\u201d Ms Jama said at the signing ceremony on Thursday, that Somalia Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohammed Gulaid attended.<\/p>\n<p><b>Airport<\/b><br \/>\nBut the Turks are not involved with just the Port of Mogadishu.<br \/>\nTravellers arriving in Mogadishu by air are greeted by the seafront Aden Abdulle International Airport, which has been renovated and modernised using Turkish technology. It is also being managed by Turkish company, Favori LLC.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2019, a mission led by Gamal Mohamed Hassan, Somalia\u2019s minister for Planning, Investment and Economic Development, visited Ankara, Turkey, and met investors united under the Turkey-Somali Business Council.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s head, Ahmet Sami Isler, told the media, \u201cWe, as Turkish businesspeople, are ready to give all contributions to utilise the resources of Somalia for the country\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turkish media giant, Daily Sabah, then reported that Somalia has earned special status, and that many projects on rural development, health, micro-macro enterprises and security have been carried out by Turkish businessmen and state agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Somali Minister Hassan stated, \u201cWe had excellent technical meetings with the Turkish delegation. This is a very good platform and mechanism to take stock of our economic and trade relations with Turkey.\u201d<br \/>\nOther projects<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Turkey\u2019s then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said his country injected aid into Somalia following a crippling famine.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Erdogan said the country also helped build roads and fisheries in Somalia, and sent a large number of Turkish experts to assist with capacity building.<\/p>\n<p>The Turks have also helped train Somalia\u2019s special forces known as Danab, and have an military base in Mogadishu as well as the largest diplomatic mission in Africa in Mogadishu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> Nation Africa<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkish ports operator Albayrak and the federal government of Somalia have signed an agreement that grants the company a new 14-year concession to manage the Port of Mogadishu.
