{"id":400936,"date":"2020-09-25T09:23:15","date_gmt":"2020-09-25T06:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/?p=400936"},"modified":"2020-09-25T09:25:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T06:25:23","slug":"somalia-committed-to-promoting-democracy-accountability-despite-covid-19-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sonna.so\/en\/somalia-committed-to-promoting-democracy-accountability-despite-covid-19-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Somalia committed to promoting democracy, accountability despite COVID-19 challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cDespite the challenges of\u00a0<a class=\"word-link\" title=\"Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a>, we are still working hard to undertake inclusive national elections where the Somali people can determine their future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are firmly committed to promoting and instilling a strong tradition of democracy and accountable governance which serves the Somali people first and foremost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like nations worldwide, Somalia has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>President Mohamed reported on the \u201cpainful\u201d contraction of the economy and job losses, as well as the need to continue investing in basic public services to protect citizens against the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can all appreciate this is a huge task for a recovering post-conflict State like Somalia,\u201d he said, \u201cbut our Government has and will remain steadfast in rising and responding to the diverse challenges that lie ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the crisis, the Somali authorities implemented tax exemptions on staple food items, thus putting people first.
