President Hassan Sheikh Arrives in New York for 81st UN General Assembly

New York, (SONNA) — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has arrived in New York to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where Somalia will highlight its development priorities, investment opportunities and security concerns in the Horn of Africa.

The President’s agenda includes discussions on development, investment and countering extremism in the Horn of Africa, placing economic development and regional security among Somalia’s priorities during the high-level gathering.

The General Debate is scheduled to run from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The annual gathering brings together heads of state and government to present their countries’ positions on global challenges.

For Somalia, the General Assembly provides an opportunity to highlight its development priorities and security concerns affecting the Horn of Africa, while engaging with international partners on issues of shared interest.

President Hassan’s visit comes as Somalia serves its second year as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025–2026 term. The membership gives Somalia a direct role in the Council’s deliberations on international peace and security.

Beyond the General Debate, the wider UN program includes discussions on sustainable development, climate action, pandemic preparedness and the right to development, bringing governments together to address economic, social and environmental challenges.
