Human Rights Commission Visits Somali Detainees in Eastern Libya

Benghazi, Libya(SONNA)-A delegation from Somalia's National Independent Human Rights Commission visited Qanfouda Prison in Benghazi to assess the conditions of Somali detainees.

The delegation, led by Acting Chairperson Mohamed Harun Mahmoud, met with Libyan prison officials and Somali detainees. Libyan authorities said about 300 Somalis are detained in eastern and southern Libya, most on irregular migration-related cases without court rulings, and confirmed preparations are underway for their release and voluntary repatriation.

The Somali delegation pledged to brief the Federal Government on the detainees' situation. The visit concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation on monitoring and supporting Somali nationals in Libya.
