AFRICOM applauds largest anti-AlShabab security op in five years

Mogadishu (SONNA) – United States command in Africa known as AFRICOM applauded the ‘largest’ security operation in five years against Al-Shabaab terror group by combined Somali and African Union troops.

“The U.S. will continue to support Somali and ATMIS partners in defeating al-Shabaab terrorists who threaten the peace and stability of Somalia,” read in part a statement from AFRICOM.

The Somali National Armed Forces have conducted recently successful operations in Abooreey, Yasooman, Booco and Sindhaqo in Hiraan and Galguduud regions where the enemy was heavily defeated.

Elsewhere, AFRICOM says it conducted an airstrike against AlShabab militants near Buulobarde city of Hiiran region after attacking SNA on Sept 18.

The command added 27 Al-Shabaab terrorists were killed and no civilians injured. The drone raid carried out “at the request of the FGS,” it noted.

“U.S. Africa Command take great measures to prevent civilian casualties. These efforts contrast with the indiscriminate attacks that al-Shabaab regularly conducts against the civilian population” it further asserted.
